Abstract: The increase of obesity on a worldwide scale and the associated chronicdegenerative diseases reduce the quality of life and cause important socioeconomic impacts. Obesity has doubled among adults and children and has tripled among adolescents, causing educators to change their views of this problem. The “Healthy School” Project arose in Brazil, including food, physical activities and vegetable gardens, the school being the agent of change. This study investigated the initiative of schools in Amparo-SP in the prevention of infantile obesity - an exploratory descriptive study of the “Case Study” type. Documents furnished by the Municipal Secretariat of Education permitted delineation of the study design, resulting in a sample of five municipal, three public and two private schools. From each type of institution, the municipal nutritionist, a physical education teacher, and the school directors were interviewed, while questionnaires were applied in approximately 12% of the classes with children between 9 and 10 years of age (n&eq;70) and to their parents (n&eq;67). The results demonstrated that, in the public schools and in one private school, the lunch provided is oriented by a nutritionist, and the orientations on healthy food are transmitted in all of the disciplines by means of transversality. Two other projects are being developed in the public schools: the “School Vegetable Garden” and the Intersectoral Forum, which seeks to know and divulge the real nutritional necessities of the students. The physical education teachers inform that the practices occur regularly, in appropriate locations, and are complemented with theoretical concepts regarding health. Transversality permits the reinforcement of the concepts in various disciplines, motivating the children to participate in the formation of vegetable gardens and to accept the changes in the lunch, with an increase in the consumption of vegetables and fruits. At meetings, parents receive information regarding food and the changes in the lunch, and demonstrate that they accompany the children’s reactions at home. The data reveal food preferences of the children in Amparo, such as sweets, chocolates, salty snacks, etc. and sedentary activities (TV) similar to those related in international studies.
